  • Day 01 – Beijing

On arrival, have a night stay at the Beijing airport hotel. Day at leisure.

    Meals Included: Nil.

    Day 02 – Beijing / Kashgar

Upon arrival in Kashgar, be met and transfer to hotel. If you’re feeling up for it, you may also wish to visit the atmospheric Night Market.

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Day 03 – Kashgar

We recommend coinciding your visit with the Grand Bazaar (opens everyday liveliest on Sundays) and the Sunday Livestock Market (Sundays only) where thousands of farmers from the surrounding fertile lands gather to trade. You can purchase anything from camels to cardamom here!

N.B. If you’ve missed the Kashgar market, you can always try for the Sunday Markets in Hotan or Kuqa.

Next, walk through the narrow streets of what remains of the quickly-disappearing old town from the bazaar. Meet the confectioners, poets and craftsmen who still ply their trades in Old Kashgar and learn about the lifestyles of other locals. Have a traditional Uyghur lunch in a local home before visiting the largest mosque in China – the Id Kah Mosque and the Apak Hoja Tomb.

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Day 04 – Kashgar / Yarkant / Hotan

Have an early start as we drive approx. 500km to Hotan. En route, stop for lunch in Yarkant, once an important stop and a developed transport hub, on the ancient Silk Road, and visit the Altun Mosque Complex with the Tomb of Ammanisahan, a Uyghur musician and queen, and the local pharmacies that sell local herbal medicines. You may also wish to stop at the Friday Mosque in the town of Kargilik. Arrive in Hotan and check-in to your hotel.

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Day 05 – Hotan

If you’ve missed the Sunday Market in Kashgar, Hotan’s more chaotic Sunday Market (also on Fridays, though less busy) is the other place to experience it! Visit the Imam Asim Tomb, a popular pilgrimage site, in Jiya, approx. 23km from Hotan. Headscarves are recommended for women. Drive to a plateau overlooking Hotan for a panoramic view over the city and to visit Kokmarim Cave.

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Day 06 – Hotan / Kuqa

Today drive about 600km through the Taklamakan Desert Highway on good roads, taking approx. 7-8hrs. Take in the landscapes of the second largest desert in the world, and Tarim River, and the diversiform-leaved poplar forests, stopping at desert villages along the way.

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Day 07 – Kuqa

Visit the Friday Bazaar (Fridays only). Afternoon, travel 72km north of Kuqa to the Tianshan Grand Canyon, characterized by oddly-shaped rocks, craggy pinnacles, rugged cliffs and deep ravines.

Also, visit the Kizil Thousand-Buddha Caves. This grotto holds some of the most impressive Buddhist art in Central Asia and it dates back to the third century, earlier than the famed Mogao Grottoes. Unfortunately, many of the finer frescoes were removed by foreign archeologists in the early twentieth century; however, what remains is still truly worth the visit.

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Day 08 – Kuqa / Urumqi

This morning, transfer to the airport for your flight to Urumqi. After breakfast, visit the Xinjiang Museum, highlighting different ethnic minorities of Xinjiang. Then, climb the Red Hill for a bird’s eye view of the whole city. Explore the International Grand Bazaar.

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

    OPTIONAL – Extension:

    • 3D2N Hemu Village and Kanas Lake

      Day 08 – Urumqi / Kanas Lake

Transfer to airport for your flight to Kanas. Upon arrival, drive to Kanas Lake Geopark (approx. 1hr drive from Kanas Burqin airport). Board a tourist bus which will take you to three very scenic stops along the way, including the iconic Moon Bay, before taking you to the tourist base where you will change buses to take you to Kanas Lake. Hike to the Guanyu Pavilion where you get a great viewpoint of the lake. Transfer to your hotel.

      Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 09 – Kanas Lake / Hemu Village / Kanas Lake

Visit Hemu Village, 70km southeast of Kanas Lake. Hike to the top of a nearby hill for a fantastic view of the village, especially during sunrise or sunset.

      Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

      Day 10 – Kanas Lake / Urumqi

Transfer to the airport for your flight back to Urumqi.

      Meals included: Breakfast

    Day 09 – Urumqi / Turpan

Drive 200km to Turpan. This is a scenic drive where you see the Gobi Desert, the windmill hydro plant and ruins along the way. Enjoy lunch under the welcoming shade of grape vines.

We visit the Karez Well, an ancient irrigation system, Emin Tower, the largest ancient tower in Xinjiang, Grape Valley for which Turpan is famous for, and the Jiaohe Ruins, an architectural wonder with a history of over 2500 years.

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 10 – Turpan / Liuyuan (Overnight Train)

Late morning, set off for your tour of Turpan, an oasis town 154 meters below sea level, with its bazaar, old town and mosques. Start with the Flaming Mountain, of the Monkey God fame; the ruins of Gao Chang, an ancient Chinese Silk Road garrison town where you will be taken by donkey cart to visit the temple area; and the Bezeklik Caves; where “Bezeklik” means “a place with beautiful decorations”.

Transfer to train station for your overnight train (private compartment, shared facilities) to Liuyuan, 2hrs from Dunhuang.

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Day 11 – Liuyuan / Dunhuang

Arrive in Liuyuan, and spend the day exploring the Mogao Grottoes (Caves of the Thousand Buddhas), a system of Buddhist caves which contain religious artworks spanning the 4th to 14th century. There are about 600 surviving caves, out of which only 30 are open to public. You will also get to visit the restricted access caves which contain the best preserved murals and sculptures in Mogao.

Transfer to your hotel spectacularly located at the edge of the dunes. Take a sunset tour to the Crescent Moon Lake and ride a camel across the picturesque Mingsha Sand Dunes. Enjoy your dinner on the dunes (or on the rooftop of your hotel overlooking the dunes).

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

    Day 12 – Dunhuang

Transfer to the airport for your flight home.
